WWF Raw – May 10, 1993 Review

WWF Raw
May 10, 1993
New York, NY
Commentators: Vince McMahon, Randy Savage, Bobby Heenan

Shawn Michaels is cutting a promo outside about how he’s going to beat Jim Duggan, and Mr. Perfect attacks him! Perfect throws him onto the hood of a car, breaking the windshield, and security comes and tries to pull them apart. Awesome open to Raw.

Bobby Heenan claims that Duggan paid Mr. Perfect off to attack Michaels.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Typhoon – King of the Ring Qualifier

Two big dudes getting ready to fight for the chance to be in the King of the Ring! Typhoon slams Bigelow, lifting him like he weights nothing. Bigelow manages to slam Typhoon too, but barely. Typhoon sends Bam Bam to the outside, but Bam Bam manages to get back into the ring before Typhoon can get him on the outside. Bam Bam smashes Typhoon’s head into the ring post, and Typhoon can’t seem to get back up. Bam Bam does it again. Typhoon rolls back into the ring, but can’t seem to get up.

When they come back from break, Typhoon is back on his feet, but still can’t seem to recover. Bigelow hits a big Samoan Drop and then follows up with a flying headbutt and gets the win over Typhoon.

RATING: 1.5/5 – Decent opening match that highlighted Bam Bam’s ability, showing that he is a threat to anyone in the King of the Ring Tournament.

Yokozuna vs. P.J. Walker

Yokozuna wins by death in this quick match against the future Justin Credible. He hits the Banzai Drop after a few minutes.

Mean Gene is here to rundown the King of the Ring Tournament so far.

Mr. Perfect vs. Mike Sharpe

Perfect sends Sharpe to the outside with a dropkick, infuriating Sharpe. Perfect doesn’t let up when Sharpe makes his way back to the ring. Perfect slams Sharpe’s head into the turnbuckle, and hits his snap neckbreaker. Sharpe and Perfect exchange chops, and Perfect kicks Sharpe low right in front of the referee. That was weird. Perfect hits a knee lift. As the wrestlers are wrestling, Bobby Heenan is channel surfing again. This is a wee bit annoying each week as it takes away from the match. Perfect hits a Perfect-Plex for the win.

Mr. Hughes (w/ Harvey Whippleman) vs. Cannonball Kid

The kid has a new name again, yet still has L. Kid on his tights. However, his new name doesn’t help him as Hughes wins quickly.

The lumberjacks make their way out to ringside, preparing for the Michaels and Duggan.

Jim Duggan vs. Shawn Michaels – WWF Intercontinental Championship

As Duggan comes out he jumps Yokozuna and lays him out. Yokozuna is angry, and I think this might come back to haunt him.

Michaels comes out on a set of crutches, likely hurting because of going through that windshield. Mr. Perfect attacks Michaels, showing that he’s not really hurt. He sends Michaels in and the match begins. Michaels bumps all over the ring for Duggan again, making him look like the most dangerous man alive.

Michaels can’t get the advantage as Duggan works him over for several minutes, overpowering Michaels and keeping him grounded. Shawn gets stuck in the ropes as Duggan continues to beat on Michaels. Duggan sends Michaels flying to the outside, and Michaels tries to run away, but Bob Backlund and Mr. Perfect won’t let him and send him back into the ring. Duggan continues the assault, but finally misses with a flying knee, giving Michaels a chance to get up.

Michaels takes his boot off and nails Duggan, sending Duggan to the outside. Michaels slowly starts to get some offence in, even though Duggan still has the upper hand at this point. Michaels does everything he can to stay on top, and locks in a side headlock on Duggan. They both get up, and Duggan hits a massive back drop on Michaels. Duggan hits another slam, but HBK kicks out. Duggan sends HBK to the outside of the ring, and they cut to a commercial break.

When they come back, Yokozuna hits a massive legdrop on Duggan on the outside of the ring while Bam Bam Bigelow distracts the referee. Yokozuna rolls Duggan in, and HBK goes for the pin, but Mr. Perfect attacks Michaels, causing the bell to ring. It doesn’t take long for all the lumberjacks to get in the ring and start brawling. Duggan clears the ring, smashing people with is 2×4 as the show closes.

RATING: 3.75/5 – Really great match from Duggan and Michaels here. Shawn is clearly one of the greatest of all time, as he gives Duggan one of the best matches of his career. Awesome match, absolutely must watch.

OVERALL RATING: 3/5 – I’m really liking the angle with Michaels and Mr. Perfect, and the match between Duggan and Michaels was excellent. If Raw had episodes like this every week in 93, it would have been awesome.
